The New York Society Library awards its Special Service Citation to ProQuest for its digitization of The New York Times from 1851-1999. This astonishing new research tool opens up completely new protocols and possibilities for research across a broad spectrum of disciplines. Of particular value is in opening up research in the Times beyond the customary index - which focuses on major world and national events - into the realm of day-to-day life in America, available through a wide miscellany of hitherto invisible sources: minor obituaries, help wanted ads, and similar published items. ProQuest is also commended for offering this source to a broad group of libraries and research institutions, not only major institutions and consortia.
This is the first non-book award given by the New York Society Library's New York City Book Awards. - Christopher Gray
