100 Years Ago, This Week, and Next Year

Monday, December 22, 2014

I love the holidays, and not just because it's my name. This Christmas, in particular, I'm mindful of exactly a century ago, when some soldiers in the trenches disregarded their orders and took a holiday from the First World War. Although America had not yet entered the war at that time, the Christmas Truce is well remembered in Europe, where people are recreating a period soccer game and transcribing relevant letters from British soldiers. My favorite bit of Truce-iana has to be this touching and witty number from a capella ensemble Coope, Boyes and Simpson.

All this leads me to remind you that our 2014 exhibition From the Western Front and Beyond: The Writings of World War One runs only through the end of December. If you haven't yet had a look in the Peluso Family Exhibition Gallery, or if you have family and friends in town who love history and books, do come by whenever the Library is open.

Whether you're visiting for the exhibition, books about the Christmas Truce, or any other reason, please note our holiday hours:

Wednesday, December 24 - 9:00 AM-3:00 PM
Thursday, December 25 - CLOSED
Friday, December 26 - CLOSED
Wednesday, December 31 - 9:00 AM-3:00 PM
Thursday, January 1 - CLOSED

Beginning Saturday, January 3, we're excited to implement our new extended hours:

Monday/Friday 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday 9:00 AM - 8:00 PM
Saturday/Sunday 11:00 AM - 5:00 PM
These hours will apply throughout the year.

From all of us at the New York Society Library, warm wishes for any or all holidays you celebrate. We look forward to seeing you.
