Celebrating Winning Words

Friday, May 29, 2015

On Wednesday May 20, the Library hosted the 13th Annual Young Writers Awards ceremony. The entry pool grew significantly this year, with nearly 400 poems and prose pieces by children in grades three through twelve. The evening opened with remarks made by trustee and chair of the Children’s Committee Susan L. Robbins, welcoming the large crowd and honoring and thanking the ongoing generosity of Jeanette Sarkisian Wagner and Paul A. Wagner, who support this annual event.

The four judges, poets and writers themselves, presented awards to the children whose submissions took first place and also those with honorable mentions. Each of the judges also addressed the participants who did not win, with words of praise and encouragement to continue writing and sharing their work.

Edra Ziesk, judge of the high school entries, promised all the writers that the more time they put into their writing the more they will improve as writers. She also gave a tribute to Carrie Silberman, outgoing Head of the Children's Library, and her work in transforming the Children’s Library from “a house to a home."
