New Online Resource: Marquis Who's Who

Friday, October 17, 2014

The Library is pleased to announce the addition of Marquis Biographies Online to its collection of online resources.

Marquis Who’s Who in America is a perennial staple of biography reference collections (the New York Society Library’s collection of over 160 annual volumes goes back to 1899), and the Marquis database contains over 1.5 million profiles from more than twenty titles published in the Who’s Who print series since 1985. The database also includes 110,000 biographies culled from the Who Was Who in America series (1607-1985). People from all fields are covered, including leaders in government, business, science and technology, the arts, entertainment, and sports.

The database is updated daily, fully searchable, and quite easy to use. Although a straightforward search by name will suffice in most cases, with the advanced search fields users can focus their searches by location, profession/career, gender, birth information, and more. Results are clear and concise with biographical data presented under subject headings such as birth information, family, education, career history, creative works, awards, military history, achievements, current memberships, interests/hobbies, and contact information. A sample biography can be seen here

Marquis Biographies Online is accessible remotely to members who are logged in to the Library’s web site.

The New York Society currently offers its members access to over 20 electronic resources, including book reviews, scholarly journals, newspapers, reference sources, and more. Almost all are accessible from outside of the Library.  If you have any questions about using any of our e-resources, please ask at the Reference Desk.
