Robert Quackenbush

Robert Quackenbush (1929-2021) was the author and illustrator of more than 170 books for young readers. His well-known story characters include Henry the Duck, Detective Mole, Miss Mallard, Batbaby, and many more. He also wrote about many historical figures, including Mark Twain, Samuel F. B. Morse, and Annie Oakley.

Quackenbush was the three-time winner of the American Flag Institute Award for outstanding contributions to children's literature and winner of an Edgar Allan Poe Special Award for best juvenile mystery. He also received a Gradiva Award for his book Batbaby, voted best children's book of the year by the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis (NAAP). His woodcut art is in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum and the Smithsonian Institution. Dr. Quackenbush was a longtime judge for the NYSL Young Writers Awards.
