Pierce Butler
Biography
Pierce Butler (1744-1822) was a statesman who was the one of the first two United States Senators from South Carolina. A native of Ireland, he served as an adjutant general in the South Carolina militia during the American Revolution. He later married Mary Middleton, the daughter of a wealthy and aristocratic family, and became a plantation owner. Butler was a delegate at the Constitutional Convention and was an advocate for slavery in the southern states.
