Elias Hicks

Biography 
Elias Hicks (1748-1830) was a prominent Quaker preacher who was born in Hempstead, Long Island. He was an opponent of slavery and published <I>Observations in Slavery</I> in 1811. He married Jemima Seaman in 1771 and had 11 children. Hicks was the leader of the liberal Hicksite separation party after a division occurred in the Society of Friends in 1827.
