John Jay

Biography
The statesman and attorney John Jay (1745-1829) lived at 133 Broadway. He completed his studies at the age of 14 at King's College, later Columbia University, and studied law under Benjamin Kiss. Jay was admitted to the New York bar in 1768. In 1774, he married Sarah Livingston, the sister of his first law partner, Robert R. Livingston. He briefly served in the Continental Congress in 1776 but resigned over his opposition to going to war. He later joined the Continental Congress as Secretary of Foreign Affairs. He was the first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, nominated by George Washington, and served until 1795. At that time he became governor of New York. He also served as President of the abolitionist Society for Promoting the Manumission of Slaves.
