Robert R. Livingston

Biography 
Robert R. Livingston (1746-1813) was a New York City attorney and statesman who graduated from King's College, now Columbia University, in 1765. He was admitted to the bar in 1773. Livingston served as the New York City Recorder from 1773 to 1775, and was a member of the Continental Congress from 1775 to 1776, 1779 to 1780, and 1784. He was one of a committee of five that drafted the Declaration of Independence but was not a signer, as he had returned to his duties in the provincial congress. He served as Chancellor of New York State from 1777 to 1801 and administered the oath of office to President George Washington in 1789. He was brother to Edward Livingston, and cousin of Philip and William Livingston
Local Note 
Robert R. Livingston was a trustee of the New York Society Library from 1754 to 1756 and again from 1757 to 1773.
