James Rivington
Biography
James Rivington (1724-1802) was a New York City publisher, bookseller and tobacconist at 1 Queen Street, now Pearl Street. He was the son of Charles Rivington, who founded a publishing house in London in 1711. Rivington began publishing the New York Gazetteer in 1773, but his press was destroyed by Liberty Boys in 1775. He resumed the publication as the Royal Gazetteer in 1777 and remained in New York during the American Revolution as a Tory, despite rumors that he provided secret information to Washington. In 1783, he discontinued the publication and worked as a bookseller and tobacconist.
