Hugh Smith
Biography
Hugh Smith was a New York City merchant who, in 1792, was one of the 24 brokers that signed the Buttonwood Agreement at 68 Wall Street (under a buttonwood tree) that developed the New York Stock Exchange. In 1793, Smith established the Tontine Coffee House at the corner of Wall and Water Streets, which served as a meeting place for the group of brokers who signed the Buttonwood Agreement.
