Gulian Verplanck (1751-1799) was a New York City merchant who lived at 35 Great Dock Street. He graduated from King's College, later Columbia University, in 1768. He served in the New York State Assembly in the 1780s and became its speaker in 1791. He was also the president of the Bank of New York from 1791 to 1799 and one of the regents of the State of New York. Verplanck was a trustee and stockholder of the Tontine Coffee House at Wall and Water Streets, a meeting place for trade and correspondence for the group of brokers who signed the Buttonwood Agreement. Verplanck was married to Cornelia Johnston.
