Bibliographic Assistant

- Part-time position in the Cataloging Department, up to 14 hours per week.
- Salary: $14.00 an hour.
- Applicants must be able to work during regular business hours, Monday-Friday.
This is an excellent position for a student currently enrolled in a library science program (MLS or MLIS); some library experience is preferred.
Responsibilities include:
- Preparing all newly cataloged items for delivery to circulation. Includes completing item and bibliographic records, attaching barcodes, applying any necessary enhancements to call numbers, and creating spine and pocket labels
- Making applicable changes to books and other materials, reflecting shifts in location, status, and availability, and updating the existing bibliographic and item records
- Handling all withdrawal procedures. Includes changing item records, and marking the materials at hand
- Retrieving materials from the collection for department staff
- Maintaining the shelflist/card catalog, on as-needed basis
- Participating in various cataloging department projects as needed. Includes database cleanups, reclassification/recuttering projects, OCLC holdings updates, assisting with identification of items for transfer to Closed Stacks and Stack 10, or for withdrawal

Children’s Assistant

The New York Society Library seeks an enthusiastic, flexible and service-oriented candidate for the part-time position of Children’s Assistant. The Assistant will work with the Children’s Librarians to help young members and their families using the Library.
Specific responsibilities:
- Assisting members to locate books and use the online catalog
- Providing reference and readers’ advisory services to families and teachers
- Performing pre-order searching for children’s book acquisitions
- Assisting with program development and implementation
- Working 10-15 hours a week, including alternate Saturdays and Sundays
- Assisting with department-related organizational tasks
Required Qualifications:
- A minimum of nine completed credits in an ALA-accredited MLS program concentrating in youth services
- Completed coursework in children’s literature
- Experience working with children and young adults in a professional or volunteer setting
- Creativity and ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
Desired Qualifications:
- Basic reference skills coursework and/or library reference experience
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word, email, database searching, and the Internet
