Children’s Librarian

The New York Society Library seeks an enthusiastic, flexible and service-oriented candidate for the part-time position of Children’s Librarian. The Children’s Librarian will work with the Head of the Children’s Library to help young members and their families to use the Library.
Responsibilities:
- Provide reference and readers advisory services to families and teachers
- Plan and present children’s programs, including storytelling, author visits, and special events
- Evaluate, select, and weed materials of interest to children and young adults
- Provide bibliographic and technology assistance for adults and children
- Develop and prepare displays, promotional materials, and recommended reading lists.
- Assist the department head to train and supervise the Children’s Assistant, support staff, and volunteers
- Participate in Children’s Library Committee meetings and events
- Assist with Library outreach projects
- Enhance professional knowledge by attending workshops, reading professional publications and participating in individual and staff training
- Maintain data and make recommendations for programs, policies, and procedures within the department
- Work 20-25 hours a week, including alternate weekends
- Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
- A Master’s Degree in Library Science with a concentration in youth services or school librarianship, from an ALA-accredited program
- Experience working with children or young adults in libraries
- Creativity and ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Familiarity with Microsoft Word, email, database searching, and the Internet

Systems Assistant

The New York Society Library, a private membership library, seeks a part-time assistant (10-15 hours per week) to the Head of Systems. Some weekend hours may be required.
Responsibilities:
- Responding to problems with library computers, peripherals and networks
- Working with the Head of Systems to evaluate needs for computer upgrades
- Scanning and translating handwritten documents
- General hardware and software maintenance
- Report writing and statistics gathering
- Assisting library members with computer problems
Requirements:
- B.A. or B.S. degree in computer/information systems or equivalent experience
- Experience with Windows network environments
- Knowledge of computer operating systems
- Familiarity with library online environments
