James Kraft, Willa Cather (11:00 AM section) - Fully Registered

Wednesday, September 17, 2014 - 11:00 AM | For Members Only | Whitridge Room | See below for session information

Willa Cather (1876-1947) is one of America’s important and often controversial writers. Her prose has a simplicity and beauty that is exceptional, and her subject matter is unusual in focusing on the frontier, Quebec, New Mexico, and very often on music. Controversial, however, because she never quite fits into our literary tradition. Many critics think she is not modern in style and often not engaged with the important issues. Of course, this critical difficulty is also what makes her so fascinating: she challenges the conventions of the reader to focus another way on our background as a nation.

Cather was a member of the Society Library for the last two decades of her life.

Participants in this seminar will read several of her novels and short stories beginning with The Song of the Lark. Copies of the short stories to be discussed and more information about recommended editions of the novels are available for registrants.

Dr. James Kraft has previously led popular Library seminars on books by George Eliot, Henry James, and others.

The 11:00 AM section of this seminar is fully registered. Limited space is still available in the 2:00 PM section.
