Rufus King
(1755-1827)
Biography:
Rufus King (1755-1827) was an American statesman and attorney from what is now Maine. He served in the American Revolution and graduated from Harvard in 1777. He studied law and was admitted to the bar, beginning practice in 1780. He was a member of the Continental Congress from Massachusetts from 1784 to 1787, and later took part in the Constitutional Convention. In 1788, King moved to New York City and was a member of the New York State Assembly. He later served as a New York State Senator from 1789 to 1796. King was the United States Minister to Great Britain from 1796 to 1803 and from 1825 to 1826. He made unsuccessful bids for vice-president and president of the United States and for governor of New York.

Rufus King was a trustee of the New York Society Library from 1791 to 1792.
