Biography:

    The commander in chief of the Continental Army during the revolutionary war and first president of the United States, George Washington (1732-1799) was among the statesmen who made use of the New York Society Library's holdings from 1785 to 1790, while New York was the federal capital and the library effectively served as the Library of Congress.
