The Dalai Lama's life is widely considered extraordinarily dedicated to peace, communication, and unity, as demonstrated by his receipt of the Nobel Peace Prize and the U.S. Congressional Gold Medal. Robert Thurman's Why the Dalai Lama Matters explores why this "simple Buddhist monk" has earned the world's love and respect, and also how restoring Tibet's autonomy within China is not only possible, but reasonable, and necessary for a peaceful world future. The book both concerns Tibet and the Dalai Lama, and offers a provocative solution for a world in conflict, dealing with the very fundamentals of human rights and freedoms.

Robert Thurman has been named one of the "25 Most Influential Americans" by Time magazine and "the leading American expert on Tibetan Buddhism" by the New York Times. The first American ordained as a Tibetan monk, Thurman is co-founder and board president of Tibet House US, President of the American Institute of Buddhist Studies, and professor in the Religion Department of Columbia University. For 45 years, he has been a close personal friend of and advocate for the Dalai Lama and his people.
