Planning a Trip? Visit a Membership Library
Wednesday, April 1, 2009

Your membership in the New York Society Library entitles you to reciprocal privileges in other membership libraries around the country. Membership or subscription libraries were common in the nineteenth century; today there are only approximately sixteen remaining, each one a vibrant institution where past and present meet. More information about our sister institutions is available online or in the 2007 book America's Membership Libraries, which can be purchased at the circulation desk or found in the stacks.

Society Library members have membership privileges at the following other libraries:

You may use their reading rooms, browse their stacks, and even check out books while you are in town. If you are going to the Boston Athenaeum, please inquire at our reference desk first for an ID card. The other libraries may call us to verify your membership here, since we do not issue library cards. All four of these institutions are lovely facilities well worth a visit and especially useful if you need a place to read and relax while you are out of town.
