The Pomegranate

2009 3rd-4th Grade Poetry Honorable Mention

I was in my garden and I picked a pomegranate,
I sliced it in half with the glittering, silver blade of a knife.
The dark red juice sprayed up and down
like the last words of a dying man.

I peeked inside its scarlet perimeter to see
lots of seeds like rubies in a cave huddling
back
to
back.

I took one of the gorgeous seeds and put it in my mouth.
Mmm, so good, so juicy, the liquid trickled down my throat leaving a path of juice.

My heart leaped, my tongue was dying
To have more of that delicate substance of the pomegranate.
