Most famous recently as Elena Ferrante’s favorite book, Lies and Sorcery by Elsa Morante (1812-1985) is one of the great achievements of 20th century women’s writing. Now available in a new, galvanizing translation by Jenny McPhee, Lies and Sorcery tells us the story of three generations of Italian women, linked together in a string of consequences resulting from disastrous choices and mischances and love. Morante understood that the upheavals of 20th-century Italy had both causes and corollaries in private life, and as such the novel is one of the great witnesses to 20th-century social history.
