This seminar introduces two of the oldest works in the literary canon: the Babylonian epic Gilgamesh and the poems of Enheduana, the world’s first named author. Helle, who has translated both works into English, will present the poems and explain their significance, history, and cultural background.

Sophus Helle is a translator, cultural historian, and postdoctoral researcher at Princeton University. Besides his books on Gilgamesh and Enheduana, he is the managing editor of the newly founded book series Library of Babylonian Literature, and has written extensively on ancient poetry and its relevance to the modern world.
