This seminar will feature a look at the literary landscape of 1884-1905. Which of James’s contemporaries in England and in America are writing novels similar to his? Which are launching out in entirely different modes? Will we all have different favorites?

In addition to James, the authors involved are Edith Wharton, Stephen Crane, William Dean Howells, Oscar Wilde, and Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens).

If time permits, we’ll also read a novel written one hundred and eight years after the death of Henry James in 1916. Its author is Percival Everett, and its title is, yes, James. It’s the perfect companion to Mark Twain’s best-known novel.
