Workshop: The Art of Reading: How to Read Like a Writer, with Daphne Merkin

Tuesday, October 3, 2017 - 6:00 PM | For Members Only | Whitridge Room | $60 for the series | Advance registration required

A workshop in the art of reading between the lines—for nuances and implications, as well as subtext—in which attention will be paid to the author’s prose style and point-of-view as well as to the larger cultural context. My hope is that participants will come away from these discussions with a less visceral and more considered response to writerly intention and textual subtlety. We will be reading a mixture of fiction and non-fiction.

Daphne Merkin is a former staff writer for the New Yorker and a regular contributor to Elle. Her writing frequently appears in the New York Times, Bookforum, Departures, Travel + Leisure, Vogue, Tablet Magazine, and other publications. She has taught writing and reading workshops at the 92nd St Y, Marymount, and Hunter College’s Writing Center. Her latest book is This Close to Happy: A Reckoning With Depression. Her previous books include Enchantment, which won the Edward Lewis Wallant Award for best novel on a Jewish theme, and two collections of essays, Dreaming of Hitler and The Fame Lunches.
