Seymour Reit (1918-2001) was the author of over 80 children's books and one of the creators of the famous character Casper the Friendly Ghost. Reit started his career working as an animator, cartoonist, and humorist. According to his wife Edmee Reit, he created Casper because ìhe wanted to write something that was gentle and wouldn't scare children.
He went on to write more than 80 books for young readers on subjects ranging from Balto the hero dog to the Confederate warship the Merrimack. Reit also wrote for Mad Magazine and Bank Street College where he led writing workshops.
