Outshine

2023 5th & 6th Grade Poetry Winner

Some of us
have always been
half.
Or smaller than half.
we are the lesser
we are the ones
who stand behind the
fortunate.

The stars that glow
despite what they
have been
through
only to be outshone
once again
by a waking sun.
The lucky
triumph
over the talented
in our world
that we call
civilized.

The older ones
Get first pick.
Always.
Because that is how
It has always been
It is somehow not wrong.
To make younger
Mean less,
Newer mean
worse.
Somehow it is
right.

The rules
don’t apply
to them
But we are the
Reason we have
The
R U L E S.

You understand
We must
Abandon hope
To this world we are
Insignificant.
No matter what
They pretend.
It is our birthright
To be outshone
To try
To change that
Is
A
Waste
Of
time.
