About Us

Founded in 1754, the city’s oldest library is a thriving community of readers, writers, and families.

Our first-floor reading room, exhibitions, and many events are open to the public. Become a member to check out books, fully use our landmark building, access member-only events, and enjoy other benefits.

The Library is a not-for-profit organization supported in part by tax-deductible contributions.

“I'm somebody who's never been able to write at home. So I started coming here after school to write high school English papers. When I graduated from college I came home and I was taking writing classes and I still couldn't work at home, so I found my way back here and began writing plays here."—Wendy Wasserstein
