Benita Eisler, Naked in the Marketplace: The Lives of George Sand

Tuesday, February 20, 2007 - 6:30 PM | Members' Room

George Sand was perhaps the first Frenchwoman celebrated throughout Europe who was neither a saint nor a king's mistress, and she was also the first female bestselling novelist. Eisler's book tells the story of Sand's whirlwind life and affairs and traces her motivations to a lifelong consciousness of class and privilege based in a one-sided relationship to her working-class mother.
