Barbara Foster, Alexandra David-Néel: Explorer of Tibet and Its Forbidden Practices

Thursday, November 18, 2004 - 6:30 PM | Members' Room

In the 1920s, David-Néel became the first European to know the monks, hermits, and shamans of Tibet and the first foreign woman to enter its capital. She journeyed over the Himalayas on foot, braving cold, bandits, and the threats of British imperial officials. She studied the esoteric practices of Tibetan Buddhism to strengthen herself and to share with the Western world.
