Seminar: Nicholas Birns, Hilary Mantel's Cromwell Trilogy

Wednesday, January 27, 2021 - 11:00 AM | online | for members only | $60 for the set of four sessions | registration required

Hilary Mantel's now-completed trilogy on Thomas Cromwell, crafty chief advisor to the unfathomable King Henry VIII, has reimagined the historical novel as a form that is at once capable of being scrupulously faithful to the archival record and fascinating in its psychological perspective. We will read the three books - Wolf Hall, Bring Up The Bodies, and The Mirror and the Light - as Mantel uses her characters and settings to trace the evolution of the earliest stirrings of a modernity we may still inhabit. Suggested background reading: Shakespeare’s Henry VIII.
