Susan Nagel, Mistress of the Elgin Marbles: A Biography of Mary Nisbet, Countess of Elgin

In the early nineteenth century, Scots heiress Mary Nisbet became famous as the wife and ally of the Earl of Elgin, ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. She was not only instrumental in diplomacy but in the controversial acquisition for the British government of the Elgin marbles.
